Control variables

To test for the influence of social networks, we had to control for other influences on the dependent variables. People who are more ideological are likely to hold firm opinions and have more political knowledge (Delli Carpini and Keeter 1996: 257). Ideological is used as before. Partisanship is coded 1 for enthusiastically supporting a party and 0 for not. The demographic and socioeconomic variables we controlled for are being Male, Age in years and its squared term (Age2), Education by degree attainment, and Employed full time (Delli Carpini and Keeter 1996: 162).
